Suno Stems, and the Order That Saves You One.

Three split modes, three different credit costs, and one rule buried in Suno's own FAQ that almost nobody covering the 3 September download cap has mentioned: a song and all of its stems count as a single download, not one per file. Get the order right and twelve stems are free of the allowance. Get it wrong and you pay twice.

The short version

  • A song plus its stems is one download. Suno's FAQ says so directly. Extract stems before you download the track.

Auto Split

Pro and Premier · 50 credits per extraction

The classic mode. Suno analyses the track and divides it into up to twelve stems — drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, woodwinds and more. You do not choose the categories; it decides what it finds.

Split from Mix

Pro and Premier · 10 credits per extraction, 20 for both resulting stems

Targets one element. You pick a single instrument or the vocal, and Suno returns that element plus a complement track containing everything else. This is the mode to use when all you actually want is an acapella or an instrumental.

Advanced Split

Premier only · 10 credits per extraction, 20 total, per stem selected

Pick from a list of nearly a hundred instruments and build custom stems to suit the track. It is the most flexible mode and the most expensive, because the cost is per stem you select rather than per operation.

One warning straight from Suno. If you try to split out an instrument or vocal that is not actually present in the song, the request may still use credits but may not produce a usable stem. In other words, asking for a saxophone stem out of a track with no saxophone in it costs you real credits and returns nothing. Listen before you queue.

THE RULE NOBODY MENTIONS

A song and its stems is one download

This changes the order you should work in, and almost every article about the download cap has missed it.

Suno's FAQ on the upcoming changes is unusually explicit on this point: all stems from a song are part of that song's single download, and downloading a song plus its stems counts once, not per file. A track and twelve Auto Split stems is one download out of your monthly twenty on Pro, not thirteen.

Read that again if you were planning your catalogue export around the assumption that stems were expensive, because it inverts the advice. Stems are not the thing to ration. The thing to ration is the number of separate times you go back to a track and pull files off the platform.

Which produces one concrete instruction: extract the stems before you download the song. If you download the mix in August, then decide in October that you want the stems, you are asking Suno for a second download of the same song under a capped allowance. If you extract first and take everything in one operation, the whole bundle costs you one slot.

The same logic applies in reverse to anything you are still unsure about. Between now and 3 September, downloads are not metered at all. If there is a track you think you might one day want stems for, that decision is free this month and costs an allowance slot next month.

One more exemption worth knowing. Suno's FAQ states that for those using Suno Studio, its professional production suite for generating and manipulating stems and samples, users will still be able to download their work from Studio without limitation. Studio exports arrive as WAV, in Full Song, Selected Time Range or Multitrack form, the last of which exports all tracks as stems within the context of your Studio mix. MIDI extraction from a stem costs 10 credits. If you work in Studio, the download cap is largely not your problem; if you do not, it is.

THE HONEST ANSWER

Why Suno stems sound worse

It is the most asked question about the feature, and the answer is structural rather than a bug.

When a mix engineer bounces stems out of a session, nothing is being guessed. The drums existed as a drum track, the bass as a bass track, and the bounce simply writes each one to disk. The stems are lossless in the sense that matters: they were always separate.

Suno does not work that way. It produces a finished mix, and the stems are pulled back out of that mix afterwards. The separation has to infer which parts of a summed signal belonged to which instrument, and the moment two elements share the same frequency range at the same moment, that inference gets hard. Advanced Split goes further still and regenerates chosen instruments rather than extracting them, which is why its output can differ noticeably from what you heard in the original.

The signatures are consistent and you will recognise all of them:

  • Bleed. Ghosts of the vocal in the instrumental, cymbals audible in the bass stem. Anything the separator could not fully attribute ends up partly in both places.
  • Smeared transients. Kick and snare attacks lose their edge, because the sharp onset is exactly the moment the signal is most crowded.
  • Thin or watery high end. Where shared high-frequency content was removed from one stem, what is left can sound gauzy and unstable.
  • Hollowness on overlapping parts. Two guitars in the same register separate badly, and both come out sounding like they are missing something.

None of this makes the feature useless. Stems are genuinely good enough to rebalance a mix, replace a part, build a remix or hand a track to someone else to work on. They are not good enough to treat as master recordings, and they will not sound like a DAW bounce, because they never were one. Set expectations there and the feature stops being disappointing.

Worth separating two problems that get confused, too. Stems sounding rough is a separation artifact. The reason a finished AI track gets flagged or bounced at a distributor is a different layer entirely: phase relationships, sub-threshold noise patterns and timing micro-variations that sit below hearing but that screening reads directly. 01Decide whether you actually need stems

Stems are for remixing, replacing a part, fixing one element or handing a track to a mix engineer. If you only want an instrumental or an acapella, Split from Mix at 10 credits does that job and Auto Split at 50 is a waste.

02Extract the stems BEFORE you download the song

This is the step that saves you allowance. Suno's own FAQ states that all stems from a song are part of that song's single download, and that downloading a song plus its stems counts once, not per file. Pull the song first and come back for stems later and you risk paying twice out of a capped allowance.

03Check the stems before you spend more credits

Listen to each one in isolation. Suno warns that if you try to split out an instrument or vocal that is not actually present in the song, the request may still use credits but may not produce a usable stem. Verify before you queue another extraction.

04Download the song and its stems together, in one go

One operation, one download counted. Take the highest quality your plan offers, because a repeat download is a repeat charge against the allowance after 3 September.

05Do your mixing work locally, not on the platform

Once the files are on your drive, the work costs you nothing and nobody is metering it. Rebalance, replace parts, re-time, comp the vocal, whatever the track needs. Bounce a new stereo mix when you are done.

06Clean and master the final bounce, not the stems

Release preparation belongs on the finished stereo file. Cleaning twelve stems individually and then mixing them is slower, and the mix itself introduces the summed result that a distributor actually scans. Process the bounce.

Step six is the one people get backwards, so it is worth being precise about why. It is tempting to clean each stem before you mix, on the logic that clean inputs give a clean output. They do not, because a distributor never sees your stems. It sees the summed stereo file you upload, and summing twelve processed stems produces a new signal with its own characteristics that nobody has checked. Mix, bounce, then run one pass on the bounce. That is the file that has to survive.

WHERE UNDETECTR FITS, AND WHERE IT DOES NOT

It does not separate stems. It handles the file you release.

Straight answer first, because it matters more than a sale: Undetectr is not a stem separator. Stem separation is Suno's own feature, and dedicated separators exist elsewhere. What Undetectr does is the step after the mixing is finished. Should I clean the stems or the final mix?

The final mix. Distributor screening reads the summed stereo file you upload, so that is the file that needs to be clean and inside loudness specification. Processing twelve stems individually and then mixing them changes the summed result anyway, which means you would still have to check the bounce. Mix first, then run one cleanup and mastering pass on the bounce.

Does Undetectr separate stems?

No. Undetectr is a signal-level processor and mastering tool for finished audio, not a stem separator. Stem separation is Suno's own feature, and third-party separators exist for it.
